Winter Wellness: 7 Tips for Staying Healthy All Season Long
Now that December is here, the official start of winter is just around the corner. This time of year often brings an increased risk of respiratory illness and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), but that doesn’t mean you can’t feel your best.
At Himalaya Family Medicine Clinic in Aurora, Colorado, our team loves helping patients stay healthy during the busy holiday season and throughout the winter. Here, we highlight seven simple tips for how to do just that.
7 practical tips for a healthy winter season
Here are seven things you can do to protect your health over the next few months:
1. Boost your immune system with good nutrition
Respiratory illnesses like influenza (flu) and COVID-19 circulate more during the winter. Eating a balanced diet featuring fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C and zinc can help boost your immunity. If you get sick, these nutrients may also reduce the severity and duration of illness.
2. Stay hydrated
Cold, dry air can increase water loss and reduce your natural thirst response, increasing the risk of dehydration. Drink water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. If you get sick, herbal teas, broth, and electrolyte drinks can help support healing.
3. Prioritize sleep
With so many holiday activities to attend, getting good sleep can be challenging. But it should be one of your top priorities. Aim for 7-9 hours a night. That can boost your mood, strengthen your immunity, and make long travel days easier.
4. Exercise regularly
Keep up your exercise routine, even during busy holiday weeks. Getting at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week supports energy and immunity. It also helps burn calories from decadent meals and desserts.
5. Practice good hygiene
During the winter, you’re more likely to encounter viruses and other germs. Wash your hands regularly, especially after coming into contact with high-touch surfaces, such as elevator buttons, doorknobs, and grocery cart handles.
Keeping a bottle of hand sanitizer in your bag or purse can provide extra protection if soap and warm water aren’t handy.
6. Manage stress
Holiday activities like shopping and traveling can be stressful. But if you don’t keep stress in check, it can weaken your immune system and increase the risk of illness.
Set aside at least 20 minutes daily to do something relaxing. Take a walk, go through a yoga sequence, or practice deep breathing.
7. Update your vaccines
Vaccines are one of the easiest ways to strengthen your immune system and reduce the risk of contagious illness. If you haven’t already, get your annual flu and COVID-19 shots. They protect you, your family, and your community.
